In this lake excursion we will visit the largest island in Lake Nahuel Huapi, truly a natural gem for its native, exotic wildlife and plant life. We will also visit the last natural forest of the Arrayanes. We have two options for our departure location: Puerto Pañuelo, located in the area of Llao-Llao, within walking distance of the famous hotel of the same name, or Puerto San Carlos, within walking distance of the Civic Center. We will travel to the island safely and comfortably in catamarans, arriving in about 1 hour from Puerto Pañuelo or 2 hours from Puerto San Carlos. We will disembark at Península Quetrihué and its Arrayane Forest. Península Quetrihué, with an area of 1000 hectares (3.9 square miles), is connected to the mainland by a small isthmus, where the picturesque little town of Villa Angostura is located. In the southern part of the peninsula we'll find a forest with characteristics found nowhere else in the world. It is the only habitat where a species takes the form of a tree.
The Arrayán is a very particular tree. It has a fine, cinnamon-colored bark, which peels off in a sort of laminate form, giving the tree its peculiar appearance. This forest was declared a National Park by law in 1980. We will have the opportunity to hike a 600 meter (2000 ft) long trail through the woods, but take special care not to break or carry any branches. We must protect this true natural monument. Continuing our journey, we will head to Puerto Anchorena, on Victoria Island.
We will hike along the leaf-covered footpaths observing the numerous species of trees such as Sequoias, Birches, Firs, Pines, etc. We’ll have the opportunity to cool off in the water at Toro Beach (during the summer months), or take a hike to the top of Bella Vista hill. To recharge our energy, we can make a stop
