Southern Chile
Travelling south from Santiago the landscape becomes increasingly green, signaling the start of one the most exciting zones of the Chile, the South. Over the years, constant rains have transformed the landscape of these regions into are rich in forests, rivers and lakes.
Going further south we will find Temuco, another fine city, the capital of the Araucania Region, the gateway to the great lakes zone of Chilean South. Only one and a half hours from there we find Lake Villarrica, one of the country's largest, set against the background of the extinct Villarrica Volcano. Along the shores of the lake are two nice resorts: Villarrica and Pucón, well known for their hotels, restaurants and other tourists services.
Further south we see the beautiful river city of Valdivia, bordered all around by rivers. The beautiful setting provides you many options such as the Nature Sanctuary of Cruces River or sailing down the Calle-Calle River to Corral Bay in the Pacific Ocean, with its colonial Spanish fortifications.
Going towards the Andes we will find a number of astonishing lakes and streams where fishing and camping are commonly enjoyed activities. Going south from there we find the city of Puerto Montt, capital of the region of Los Lagos. In this picturesque city there are top quality hotels and bustling commercial activity. Puerto Montt is the departure point for all excursions to the Island of Chile and to the unforgettable visit to the San Rafael glacier.
To visit Puerto Montt and experiencing the Vicente Perez Rosales National Park with its volcanoes, rivers and lakes becomes a wonderful opportunity. Being there is an unforgettable experience; more so if the lake Todos Los Santos is crossed by boat. Also is worth crossing the Andes to Argentina to reach Bariloche over the Nahuel Huapi Lake.
From here our journey takees us to the "End of the World," and through the magic land of Patagonia a one-of-a-kind place that will surprise everyone. The southernmost point is where we find Punta Arenas, the capital city of Magallanes. This place, across the Magallanes Strait can be reached only by air or sea from Puerto Montt.
Punta Arenas is the starting point for excursions to Torres de Paine National Park, one of the most visited spots in the country. |
