We leave early by private bus and head across the "Pampa de Anta" for the small village of Chincheros. From here we start our hike. Along the way we will enjoy spectacular views of the Vilcabamba mountain range and Salcantay Mountain, at a height of more than 20,240 feet (6,200 mts.) above sea level.
After 2 hours (from Yucay) or 3 hours (from Cusco). we will arrive in Maras, where the local villagers own the age-old salt wells built in pre-Incan times. During Inca times, the wells furnished salt to the whole empire. We continue on to the Moray Amphitheatre, once the site of an agricultural experimentation center in Inca times. We then descend to the Sacred Valley of the Incas to the village of Tarabamba where we catch the bus back to Cusco. |
