Puerto Maldonado is the capital of the Madre de Dios region, in southeastern Peru. It is also known as the gateway to the southern Amazon rainforest. The central tower of the Obelisk offers views of the city, as well as exhibitions on local history. On the shore of the Madre de Dios River, near the Plaza de Armas, there is a bustling ferry dock. Near the city, the national reserve of Tambopata encompasses savanna lands and primeval jungle with great biodiversity.
